Learn Basic Ergonomic Principles. Define ergonomics as the science of fitting the task or workstation to the person, not forcing the person to fit the task. Recognize that ergonomics is a lifestyle and an ongoing awareness, not just a workplace trend.
Learn About Risk Factors. Identify common ergonomic risk factors such as posture, force, repetition, contact stress, vibration, and environmental influences. Understand how risk factors contribute to discomfort, fatigue, and injury.
Identify the Relationship Between Risk Factors and Injury. Explain how duration, intensity, frequency, and combinations of risk factors increase the likelihood and severity of injury. Recognize early signs and symptoms of ergonomic-related injuries and the importance of early intervention.
Understand Misconceptions. Dispel myths such as “one size fits all” and “buying new equipment solves all problems.” Understand that most ergonomic improvements are low-cost or no-cost, and that awareness, training, and habit changes are often more effective than equipment alone.
Learn Control Measures. Apply practical control measures, including adjusting equipment (chair, keyboard, mouse, monitors), optimizing the environment, organizing workspace and tools, and incorporating microbreaks and stretching. Understand the importance of adapting the workstation to the user, not the other way around, and the value of ongoing awareness and self-care.
